REFERRAL SERVICE FOR FAMILY & DIVORCE MEDIATORS This referral service, is a list of Advanced Practitioner Members of The Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR) who practice in the areas of family mediation and divorce mediation and have met strict training and experience requirements.
Approved mediators have met the following requirements: Training: Approved mediators have completed a minimum of 60 hours of family mediation training which includes either a 30 hour family mediation training course or a 40 hour divorce mediation training course as well as 20 hours of continuing training every two years. Additionally, approved mediators have completed two hours of domestic violence awareness training. Experience: Approved mediators have completed at least 250 hours of face-to-face family mediation in at least 25 different cases.
Selecting a Mediator: ACR recommends that you approach hiring a mediator just like you would any other professional (such as a physician, lawyer or accountant). Generally, you should obtain the following information in selecting a mediator:
- Background, education and training of the mediator.
- Experience or knowledge in mediating the type of case you have.
- Fees charged and how the fees are to be divided among all parties.
- The mediator's membership in professional associations.
- Whether the mediator is certified. (Please note that certification is available only in certain states).
